Description: | Muring talks about her memories of when her parents used to make salt in Pa Main in the past and describes the salt making process. The first step is to collect firewood to keep the fires burning for a long time. Then they fetch salt water from the salt springs (bu'ed) and fill up a kawa' or periuk cooking pot. The kawa' is bigger than the periuk. Then they boil it down until the water has evaporated and the salt remains. At this stage, they transfer the salt into small bamboos (bulu' betung or bulu' telang) and reheat them on the fire. Finally, when the bamboo is hot they take them off the fire and leave them on a shelf to dry. When dry, the salt is hard. Then they wrap the salt in palm leaves (da'un ilad) and tie it with rattan. Then the salt is finished. Muring explains that as a child she would sometimes be tasked with moving the logs around to keep the fire burning. She would also be given her own child's portion (tudtu' kelupit) which she would carry back with her. Finally, she describes how in the past people wouldn't sell the salt but would share it around with other people in the longhouse. That way, if other people went to make salt later on, they would return the favour. The following equipment was used: Zoom H4N, lavallier mic, wind gag, Canon EOS 60D, Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens. The recording is in mono and WAV format. | |
