| Description: | Lucy describes how the Education Unit of the Kelabit Association - Rurum Kelabit Sarawak or RKS - help to promote and preserve the Kelabit language. In this recording, Lucy lists some of the aims of the Education Unit. Firstly, she explains that an important aim was to encourage children to do well in school. One initiative was to create an Award Ceremony and hand out cash prizes to everyone who had done well in their exams. The prizes depended on exam results and the criteria were slightly different for those in Bario and the interior, compared with those in town. This reflects the advantages that children in town have, Lucy explains. Secondly, she states that another important aim is to preserve and maintain the Kelabit language. One way in which the Education Unit has helped with this goal is to start two Kelabit language preschools in Bario and Pa Ukat. The preschools were named 'tawa' raut' in Kelabit. Finally, Lucy discusses that a third aim is to build an archive of materials on the Kelabit people. The discussion continues in Part 2 (BAR21082014CH_09).
