Description: | David talks about his memories of the Z Force parachuting into the Highlands during the Second World War and meeting Tom Harrisson. The Z Force or Z Special Unit was an allied forces unit that parachuted into the jungle in Borneo in 1945 in order to recruit indigenous people to help with guerilla warfare behind Japanese lines. They were captained by Major Tom Harrisson who had a long-standing relationship with the Kelabit community. In this recording, David explains his memories of the planes circling in the sky and watching the men parachute down with a mixture of fear and curiosity. They later trained the local people and gave them army shirts to wear. David also discusses how Tom Harrisson played a role in setting up the first school at Pa' Main after the war had ended. This village was in the centre of the Kelabit Highlands but is no longer inhabited. Next, David discusses how he went to school at Batu Lintang, in Kuching, where he began to learn other languages and mix with other groups. Finally, he describes visiting Tom Harrisson at the Sarawak Museum in Kuching and disgussing the possibility of joining the British Army. Eventually, David did join the army and later became part of the Sarawak Rangers. The following equipment was used: Zoom H4N, Lavalier Mic, wind gag, Canon EOS 60D, Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens. The recording is in mono and wav format. | |
