| Description: | Gerawat describes how Kelabit women used to pound rice in the past. This process is known as 'tupeh padey' in Kelabit and is how you produce rice that can be cooked (i.e. bera) from the paddy (i.e. padey) by removing the husks and outer layers. It is an important part of the rice milling process. The Kelabit pound the rice in an 'iung' which is a small table with a hole in the middle. They use an 'aluh', which is a long thick stick used as a mortar. Once pounded, the rice (or bera) can be cooked. Cooked rice is referred to as nuba' (see e.g. 'Procedural Text - How to Cook Nuba' Laya' BAR17082014CH_01).
