| Description: | Florance completes task 3 from the Questionnaire on Information Structure (QUIS) Manual (Skopeteas et al 2006). This task involves looking at two pictures in a series and narrating the two pictures as though they represented a story: the first picture providing the context for the second. The pictures varied in terms of whether the actor or undergoer was new in the second picture and in terms of whether actor and undergoer were animate or inanimate. The purpose of the task was to explore whether animacy or givenness had any effect on clause structure (e.g. voice choice, word order). The results of this task do not show any obvious impact but it is possible that the results were affected by the fact that we were both looking at the pictures and many of the images were repeated. This suggests that both participants may have been interpreted as given in all contexts and is reflected in the use of the particle 'na'ah ih' which is typically used for discourse given entities modifying participants in conditions where they are supposed to represent new information. The following equipment was used: Zoom H4N, Stereo Mic, wind gag. The recording is in stereo and wav format. | |
