Description:Translation (Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai & Keita Kurabe) The story I'm going to tell is “The Chicken and the Duck Who Went to the Manau.” Once upon a time, the chickens in a village were getting ready to attend a funeral Manau. Then the ducks, who lived in a stream near the village, heard that the chickens were going to the Manau and asked to go along with them. The chickens said, “You walk too slowly.” “We can't take you.” “We'll be late for the Manau.” “We might miss it.” But the ducks pleaded, “Please take us with you.” “We'll hurry and walk fast.” “We'll keep up with you.” The chickens reluctantly agreed to take them. After a while, the chickens walked ahead briskly. They didn't wait for the ducks and kept going on their own. The ducks, though slow, followed behind at their own pace. When they reached a big river, the chickens couldn't cross it and were stuck on the riverbank. Then the ducks caught up and started to cross the river by themselves. The chickens called out, “Hey, ducks! Let us cross too!” “We really want to go to the Manau!” But the ducks said, “You didn't wait for us, remember?” “So now we'll go without you.” Worried that they'd miss the Manau, the chickens begged, “Please, let us cross.” “We promise to warm your eggs for you all our lives.” Then the ducks thought for a while and said, “Hmm… that's not enough.” “Jjust like you do,” "Let us live with you together with humans!" The chickens, desperate to join the Manau, agreed to the ducks' request. So they made a promise. The ducks carried the chickens on their backs, helped them cross the great river, and they all joined the Manau happily together. From that day on, as promised, the chickens have warmed the ducks' eggs just like themselves, and let the ducks live with humans.
