Description:Translation (Htoi San & Keita Kurabe) Now, I will tell the story of how we Kachin people were given wealth. Long ago, the deity distributed wealth to all the peoples of the earth. At that time, we Kachin people also participated. Before distributing the wealth, the deity wrote letters on animal skins and gave those letters to the people first. They gave them first. At that time, our ancestor did not look at the letter carefully and let it get wet in the rain. So, he thought to dry it out and roasted the animal skin over a fire. As it was an animal skin, it started to smell good. Our ancestor was very hungry and since it smelled very good, he roasted and ate the letter on the animal skin. So, our ancestor could not know what was written on that letter. What kind of wealth would be distributed, when and how it would be distributed, our ancestor did not know. So, when the day came to receive the wealth, he saw his friends bringing back a lot of wealth from the deity. He asked his friends, "Friends, what are you carrying?" Then his friends said, "Didn't you read the letter from the deity?" "It said to come and get wealth today." "That's what was written." "The deity had commanded us to do so." "That窶冱 what was written on the letter on the animal skin." Then our ancestor said, "If that's the case, then I will go get it too!" He took a basket he saw and set out. That basket had large gaps in it. He carried it and went to the deity. So, our ancestor set out. He took a basket with large gaps. After much had already been distributed, he arrived at the deity. He said, "Deity, I have just arrived!" "Please give me whatever is left!" The deity gathered up what was left in the corners and gave it to him. Even so, it was enough to fill the basket. When he carried the full basket home, the wealth he received slowly fell through the gaps in the basket. So, by the time he reached home, there was only a little left. So, he said, "Oh no, I've dropped so much!" "Tomorrow, I won't let anything fall." There was another notice to come the next day. So, to not drop anything the next day, he asked his wife, "Tomorrow, I will take a cloth bag." "A cloth bag." "Please make me a large cloth bag." He asked his wife. His wife made a cloth bag that could hold about 3 feet. She sewed and layered torn cloths together. The next day, our ancestor set out with the bag. He set out early. He thought, "Yesterday I was late." "So today I'll go on time." So, early the next morning, he set out with the bag his wife had sewn. And, he arrived earlier than anyone else that day. "Alright, Deity, today I am the first to arrive." "Today, before giving it to others," "please give me a lot!" When he said that, the deity put it in the bag. Just as he brought a large bag, the deity filled it up. They kept filling and filling it until it was full. Our ancestor tightly closed the bag. Then he carried it back with all his strength. He carried the bag back with great effort. This time, nothing fell out because it was a cloth bag. It was very heavy. After carrying the very heavy bag for a while, he rested by the roadside. He rested under a tree growing by the valley. He wondered, "What kind of wealth is so heavy today?" He wanted to know and couldn窶冲 wait until he got home, so he opened it. Thinking he would bring a lot home, curious about the contents, he opened it while resting. "What kind of wealth is so heavy?" When he opened the tightly closed bag, there were only eyes, just eyes. Big eyes were staring at him. He was surprised and said, "Wow, these are spirits!" "Could it be that I have been carrying spirits all this time?" "No wonder my friends didn窶冲 come early today!" "Hmm, this isn't good." "I can't take all of this home!" Near the valley by the tree where he were sitting, "Here, you stay here!" he said, and took out some spirits and left them there. Then, after walking for a while, when he found a big tree, he took out some spirits from the bag there too and left them there. "You stay here by this tree!" After passing the big tree and walking for a while, he crossed a mountain. After crossing the mountain, "Here, you stay here!" he said, and took out some spirits from the bag there too. Then he found an empty house and said, "Here, you stay here!" He left more spirits there before heading home. In this way, by taking out and leaving spirits along the way, by the time he reached home, he had left quite a number of spirits behind. However, there were still spirits left in the bag. Because the bag he took was very large, there were still quite a lot left. He left the spirits in front of and behind his house. He also left the spirits around the house, like at the fence and other places. He kept taking out and leaving spirits from the bag. That is why in our Kachin land, we find a lot of gold and jade and other natural resources. This is because when our ancestor was given wealth by the deity, these were the things that fell through the gaps in the basket. And in our mountains, valleys, and large trees, spirits dwell. As mentioned earlier, these spirits are said to be the ones our ancestor took out and left from the bag. This is how the people of old told the story of the deity distributing wealth to us.
