The Duleng clan is the sixth clan of the Jinghpaw ethnic group. Then the Kareng Duleng clan descended. In the past, when our ancestors began to migrate, there were three lands: Mali Hku, Hkrang Hku, and Chyai Hku. I have heard that the Jinghpaw people separated when they arrived at Chyai Hku. I learned that there were many children of Shapawng Yawng and Jan Jan Hpawsang. They had eight sons; the eldest son was Marip Gam Gum Ja, the second son was Lahtaw Naw Lawn, the third son was Lahpai Daina La, the fourth son was Nhkum Tu Shan, the fifth son was Tang Bau Maru, the sixth son was Dureng Yaw Kadang, the seventh son was Hkashu Hkasha, and the eighth son was Maran. The sixth son, Dureng Yaw Kadang, married women from the Run clan and the Jan clan. He had two children: Duren Hkap Hpungwa and Damau Tai. People say that Lat Kareng and Naw Kareng are clans derived from the Damau Tai clan. Today, people from China, Da Nai, and India say that they are from Galeng clan. Galeng clan and Dureng clan share the same ancestors. They are the descendants of Damau Tai. Our ancestor Hpungwa passed down his lineage while living in the mountains to the east of the Mali Hka River and the Shang Hka River. There are many people who belong to Dureng clan in Putao. He had seven sons: Hpung Marawt, Naw Kashang, La N-ga, Tu Ginram, and others. There is the Chyai Hka River in the east. I have learned that the areas around the Chyai Hka River, Shang Hka River, the Mali Hka River, and Hpuk Ing River belong to the Dureng clan. These areas are known as Dureng Land. In Dureng Land, there is no hereditary chief (Du) who rules the land. We use only a democratic system. In the Jinghpaw language, we say 'Gumrawng Gumsa,' which means democracy. But we do have people in charge who manage the land for development, and they're elected by the public. The elected committee discusses and solves any problems or issues with the land. They do not collect tax. I have heard that they only deal with problems and help develop the land. Although it is the land of the Dureng clan, other clans such as the Magawng clan, Maran clan, and Marip Maran clan, who share the same ancestors, live here together. Also, the Nung people, who are one of the Jinghpaw subgroups, live in the east. In the south, the Daru people and the Matwang people live. The Hkamti Shan people live in Putao. They are not descended from Jinghpaw ancestors. However, they share many of the same stories and customs. There are also old villages of the Ndawng, Nung, and Jinghpaw clans. The Marip Maran clan also lives with other clans and shares similar stories and traditions. When the British colonized our land, we always referred to it as the Dureng place. It was a large area. They were surprised to hear that wherever they went around here, we introduced it as the place where the Dureng people lived. The British officials said, "There are many places where the Dureng clan lives, so let's name those places Dureng Land." We can see this name in historical records and documents. Many clans such as Marip, Maran, and Nhkum live here together, but not as slaves or servants of the Dureng clan. Everyone has ownership rights because there is no hereditary chief (Du) there. This is the land of all people. In Dureng Land, we don't collect taxes. There is no hereditary chief (Du). There are only elders and chiefs (not Du Wa) who administer the land. Dureng Land is a place where democracy is practiced. The Burmese people arrived here only during the military socialist era. We learned that this was when the Burmese people arrived. In the past, there were no Burmese people here. There were some Chinese people here. During feudal times, we learned that people used horses and engaged in trade. Some Indian people also live here. However, they blended into our ethnic groups and later identified themselves as Shan or Jinghpaw. We have learned that Dureng Land is a place where people govern and manage development together, and where democracy is practiced. This is a land where we don't need to pay taxes or where taxes are not collected. That's why we call it a place where democracy "Gumrawng Gumsa" is practiced. We can learn that this is how this place is designated as Dureng Land. Anyway, we Jinghpaw people are the descendants of Shapawng Yawng and Jan Jan Hpawsang. Our elders say that this is a place where people from any ethnic group can visit and live, even though it is Dureng Land. This is what I have learned from our elders.
