Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai) This story is about the gold rooster Gang Seng. This is also a real event. People say it still exists today. Our elders usually tell this story. A long time ago, there was a nat spirit called Zau Ra on Ndawng Bum Mountain. There was a widow and her daughter, too. The daughter's name was Akama. They worked in the field. That year, there was heavy rain throughout the season, and they didn't even have time to burn the field. When they tried to burn the field, the fire didn't catch properly and only smoke came out because the trees were wet. The daughter felt so discouraged and said, "How can the two of us finish all this work?" She tried to think of a plan, but she couldn't come up with anything. She felt depressed and cried. In the end, she shouted, "I will marry the one who can clear this field!" After she shouted, a handsome young man appeared at the edge of the field and said, "Young lady, why are you depressed?" She explained, "I live with my widowed mother. Other families have men to help them, but there are only two women in our family. We can't finish clearing this field. So, I have decided to marry whoever clears this field for us." He asked her, "Do you really mean it?" She said, "Yes. I will marry the one who clears this field." Then he said to her, "Okay. Go back to your house. Prepare rice seeds to plant here, and come back the day after tomorrow." When she went there the day after tomorrow, the field was all clear. Since the young man was a nat spirit, he had the power to do it. The field was cleared so well that even the stumps and logs could not be seen. He cleaned it very well. Using his power, he made the wind sweep everything away. Then the girl and her mother planted rice in the field. As she had promised, she had to marry the young man. Whenever they needed to clear weeds and grass, he always came to help. They harvested a lot of rice. One day, the mother discussed with her daughter about asking for bridewealth. It seemed like the mother couldn't see her son-in-law. She often met her daughter and discussed it. The daughter said, "Mom, they will give you lots of valuable things. There is a rooster called Ja Gang Seng. Ask them to give it to you." The mother asked her, "What is that, my daughter?" The daughter explained, "That's the bird. You can ask it for anything you want. It will crow when you ask for something and give it to you. If you need something urgently, you can pull out one of its golden feathers and sell it to make money easily. The feathers will grow back again." The mother said, "Okay." They discussed what to ask for the bridewealth. One day, the mother went to the land of the nat spirits to ask for the bridewealth. The daughter told her, "Mom, I will leave ashes along the way. You just need to follow the ashes." The nat spirits kept everything secret, so their place would not be discovered. One day, the mother prepared to go there. She followed the ashes her daughter had left along the way. She crossed mountains and ravines and finally arrived at the palace where the nat spirits lived. When she arrived there, she said, "My daughter, I am here." The daughter said, "Mom, come. Sit here." At that time, the mother saw her son-in-law, and his family welcomed her warmly. They gave her many valuable things. In the end, she also asked for the gold Gang Seng bird and returned home. She sold the feathers whenever she needed money. Since the feathers grew back on their own, she could sell them again and again. She could also ask the rooster to keep war away from her village. When it crowed, war did not come to the village. In the past, we and the Burmese had a war. The Burmese learned about the bird and were jealous of us. They wanted to weaken its power. They consulted a fortune teller and told the Jinghpaw people, "You should cut the rooster's comb. It isn't very beautiful now, and a new one will grow back." The Jinghpaw people also believed what they said and cut the rooster's comb. That was why we were defeated by the Burmese, because they managed to weaken the bird's power. I'm not sure exactly when it happened. It might have been during King Mindon Min's era, or even earlier. The Burmese defeated us. The Jinghpaw people believed a new, beautiful comb would grow back, so they cut it. They also pulled out the bird's feathers, hoping they would grow back. In fact, they fell into the Burmese people's scheme. I don't know if it is true or not. When the British captured King Thibaw, they also took the rooster. Some say it is still alive. It was the bridewealth for Akama's marriage to the nat. After the rooster's comb was cut, the Jinghpaw people lost the war. The rooster didn't crow anymore. If you block the soft spot on the rooster's beak, it won't crow. That was the bridewealth of Akama. Our elders told us that we were defeated by the Burmese people after we cut the rooster Gang Seng's comb. People say that the rooster still exists in England.
