| Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) There is a story our elders often tell us about the origin of alcohol. It is also our traditional drink. A long time ago, there was a widow in a village. She worked in a field. She planted yams in her field. The yam plants started to grow tubers. As harvest time approached in September and October, she saw the leaves drying. When she checked the yams, she saw bite marks and thought, "I have worked so hard to grow these plants, but who ate my yams?" She planned to find and catch the culprit. She thought of sleeping in the field. She lit a campfire in a hut. At that moment, she heard the sound "Hkyen Hkyen Hkyen" near the hut. A little later, she heard the same sound again. (In Jinghpaw, we say "Hpyi malu ai," which means "to peel." We can also say "Hpyi hkyen ai," which has the same meaning. "Hpyi" means skin.) Later, as the campfire was burning out, a creature flew toward the hut. It was "Hkyet Kaw," which can easily be found in the field. It has big eyes, and its tail is pointed like a knife. It is only about the length of a thumb. The widow said, "It's you! You eat my yams! I won't set you free!" She caught it. She tied the Hkyet Kaw's legs with sticks so it could not move. Hkyet Kaw was hungry, and at the same time it felt pain. It said, "Grandma, please release me. I will tell you who ate your yams." The widow said, "No, I won't set you free." It said, "No, it's not me." She insisted, "Yes, it is you! You ate my yams! You have a sharp, pointed tail. I heard the sound of peeling yams, and then you flew into the hut. It must be you!" It denied, "No, it is not me." It begged the woman to let it go, but she refused. The widow said to it, "If you say you didn't eat my yams, tell me who did?" Hkyet Kaw said, "Grandma, it's really not me. It's a porcupine. How could I eat yams? The porcupine ate your yams!" She asked it, "Really? Are you sure?" It answered, "I am sure." She asked, "What should I do then?" It said, "Grandma, use your rope to set a snare and catch the porcupine with it." Then she looked for a rope, but she couldn't find one. As she was just a widow, she didn't have any rope either. In the end, she used her fabric belt to set a snare. The porcupine was trapped in her snare. It was caught in the trap. It tried so hard to cut the belt, but the belt didn't break. While it was biting the belt to break it, it noticed many lice on it. The porcupine felt disgusted seeing lice on the fabric it was biting, so it stopped biting. It thought, "I won't bite it. I'd rather die than do it." The next morning, when the widow came to check the snare, she found the porcupine there. She said, "Oh, that's you! You ate my yams!" It said, "That's me. I ate them because I was hungry. Please, show mercy on me. Please don't kill me." It begged the widow, "Please, spare me. Don't kill me." She said, "Anyway, give my yams back." But the porcupine had already eaten them, so it could not return them. It said, "Grandma, instead, I will give you medicine to take when you are tired. Please spare my life." She asked it, "Fine. What kind of medicine is that? How do I use it?" It said, "Follow my footprints. My footprints are really tiny, so follow them carefully. Take all the roots I've bitten. Take the leaves I rolled over, too. Gather all those leaves and roots, dry them, and pound them. Use a bit of that medicinal powder, then you will get a really tasty drink that can relieve your tiredness." She said, "Okay. Then I will spare your life." She said, "Keep your promise." The porcupine replied, "I will, if you spare my life." Then she freed it from the snare. Now we use medicinal herbs from China.
