After that, God wondered what could become food for humans. Then He called all the creatures that could lay many eggs, give birth to many young, or produce many fruits. As humans needed food to survive, they asked God, "How will we survive?" Then God asked the other creatures, "Who will take care of humans? Who will become food for them? Which of you, who have many young or produce many fruits, are willing to feed them?" Kasan, a plant of the aloe family, said, "I will. I can grow in any kind of land. I do not need to be cared for. I clear the weeds around me. I will be food for humans." Kasan is a kind of aloe plant that grows well anywhere. It has sharp, pointed leaves. God said, "Alright. You will provide food for humans." Then he turned to the humans and said, "Eat this. Let this plant fill your stomach." After growing it for a year, the plant and its roots had grown larger, but it did not bear much fruit. The buds were white, and only a few fruits had grown. After a year of growth, the fruits were not enough to fill even one human's stomach. Then the humans said to God, "God, Kasan grows very well, but it does not bear much fruit." God said, "I see. If you do not like Kasan and say it cannot provide enough for you, then it is not good." The Kasan plant was the first to offer food for humans, but it could not provide enough. Then God asked the others, "Very well. Who will be food for humans now?" The elephant grass, which grew strong roots and needed no care, said, "I do not need weeds to be cleared around me. I clean them myself. I grow very tall and bear much fruit." Then God said to the humans, "Take this elephant grass and eat it to survive." The humans were happy and accepted it. They did not need to care for the elephant grass, yet it still grew well and bore much fruit. The plant grew large fruits. They thought, "This will surely be enough to feed us. Now, this is great for us." When the fruits dried, they collected them and pounded them. The seeds inside were very small, so they were not enough to feed humans. Then the humans went to God and said, "God, this is not working for us either. This cannot provide enough food. It grows big and bears many fruits, but the edible seeds are too small. This is not good." God said to the elephant grass, "Humans say you are not fit for them. They say you cannot provide enough food for them. So you will no longer be their food." Then God asked, "Who will be food for humans? Who will take responsibility?" At that time, the rice plant said, "I can provide food for humans if other plants also help take care of humans along with me. However, I need a lot of hands to take care of me. I need to be cut, burned, and cleaned. Also, I cannot clear my surroundings by myself. The grass and weeds around me must be removed." It clearly said what it needed. It said, "I also need the help of others while I am still growing." God asked, "Who would like to help the rice plant?" There is a kind of sago palm called U Lai, which we usually pound to eat. We can see a lot of it in the highland areas, but not usually in the plains. Then the sago palm said, "While the rice plants are growing, I can be food for people. I can take care of them for a season." God said, "Okay. You take care of people for a while." The sago palm said, "Let me feed the people for a while until the rice is ready to eat." Then the other kinds of yams said, "We will also help provide food for them." Herbs such as basil, mint, and Vietnamese coriander said that they would also be spices to make the food delicious. Different kinds of yams, such as tapioca and taro, along with sago palm, are substitutes for rice before the rice is ready to be eaten. Spices also make the food more delicious and make people want to eat more. Then God said, "Now we have rice for humans. What about dishes? What will they eat with rice?" The rice said, "I cannot feed humans alone. Who will be the dishes for them?" Then bamboo said, "We can be food for them for a season." The sprouts said, "We can also be food for them." Sprouts, sumbwi (a kind of shrub with an edible core), and sago palms said that they could be dishes for humans. Then God asked, "What about meat and fish?" The fish said, "I can carry thousands of eggs. I lay thousands and thousands of eggs. I will take care of them." God said, "Alright. You said you will take care of them. But it means you are sacrificing your children. You will be a sinner for killing them when you die." The fish said, "Right. Therefore, I will not close my eyes even after I die because I am sinful. I will show that I am responsible for it forever." Our elders said that fish once had scales as big as a knee. The sin of killing its own children caused the fish to lose those big scales. The one who took care of human food the most was the fish. The chicken also said, "I can be food for humans, too. I lay dozens of eggs at once. But I need to be raised by humans." Therefore, we kill the chickens and eat them when we need to, and we also eat their eggs. The chickens and the fish mainly provide food for us. The rice said to all of them, "Alright. Let's take care of humans. Let's be food for them." They decided to be food for people. That's why we can eat rice and those foods now. Kasan, a plant of the aloe family that would take full responsibility to be food for humans, had to live away from humans. The elephant grass, which had big roots and bore much fruit, also ended up giving up being food because it did not find other companions to help provide food for humans.
