| Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) Once upon a time, there was a man with two wives in a village. One of his wives was a good woman, while the other was a witch. Each of them had a daughter. One day, the king's son, the prince, was of the right age to get married, so the king called all the girls in the country for the prince's consort selection. The king and the prince were checking all the ladies' fabrics. The ladies competed with each other over who would marry the prince. The daughters of the witch and the good woman also went to the selection. The father sided with the witch and favored her because he was afraid of her. He did not care for his first wife and daughter. The first wife and her daughter had to prepare everything by themselves as much as they could. She knew how to weave and taught her daughter. (We used to use "Shingkyit," a fabric belt, in the past, but now we only see it used during traditional dance festivals.) The daughter wove a belt with beautiful patterns and went to the selection. The king and the prince saw her coming in with that belt. The king asked the ladies what gifts they had brought. The ladies said that they had brought precious things. However, when the king asked that girl, she said, "I cannot afford to give valuable things. I am very poor, so I made this belt using scraps of cloth. I wove it with the weaving skills that my mother taught me." The other ladies brought many different kinds of valuable things as marriage gifts. "Ri Htawng" means pieces of thread. Then the king chose the girl to be the prince's consort. The girl moved into the palace from that day on. While living in the palace, she wove many kinds of clothes and bags. ("Htawng Hkun" is a kind of bag that our elders used to carry long ago, though it is no longer used today.) Meanwhile, the witch wanted her daughter to marry the prince and live in the palace. Her daughter was not married yet. She thought of a plan and said to herself, "I will do anything to get my daughter married to the prince." One day, the witch called her stepdaughter to their house. The witch was sitting in the kitchen, boiling water in a kettle, while her own daughter was in the room. When her stepdaughter arrived, she said to her, "My daughter, the prince's wife, help me look for lice in my hair." She bent her head and said to her stepdaughter. The stepdaughter was looking for lice in her stepmother's hair. Soon, the stepmother said to her, "Comb my hair with this comb." A few minutes after the girl began combing her stepmother's hair, the stepmother said, "Give me that comb." The stepmother took the comb and dropped it through the gaps in the bamboo floor to the ground. And she told her, "Go pick up the comb." When the prince's wife went beneath the house to pick up the comb, the stepmother poured boiling water on her and killed her. She took the princess's attire and made her own daughter wear it. Then she sent her to the palace. When the witch's daughter lived in the palace, she did not weave at all because she did not know how. The king doubted and said, "She wears the same attire, but she is not the same as before." He was unhappy with the thought. He was wondering why things felt wrong. The innocent girl who died was reborn as a turtle. Later, the witch's daughter fell ill and craved turtle meat. Then the witch sent people to capture the turtle. The turtle's mother warned it, "If they search upstream, go downstream. If they go downstream, flee upstream." Then, the witch's people came to catch the turtle. Her men surrounded both the upstream and downstream. In the end, they caught it. The witch and her daughter thought of eating the turtle. The witch was pleased and relieved that her daughter was finally living in the palace as the prince's wife. The turtle was cooked with gourds. Because the turtle was the girl reincarnated, it cried out in a human voice while being cooked with gourds. Then they knew that something was not right, so they threw the dish away. Later, the gourd seeds sprouted and grew into plants. The plants grew in the widow's family's field and later bore gourds. Then the family picked it up and cooked it. Not long after eating it, the widow became pregnant, and the girl who had been killed by the witch was reborn in her womb. Like in a fairytale, the baby grew up very quickly and became an adult. She vividly regained all the memories of how she had been treated in her past life. She remembered how she had been bullied and killed. The witch's daughter couldn't weave the traditional bags that the reincarnated girl had woven before she died. The witch's daughter wore the exact same clothes and pretended to be the real princess, but she couldn't fake her weaving skills. The king said, "This isn't right. We must finish weaving these." Then he gathered the ladies from the country again. The reincarnated girl arrived at the selection wearing the same belt she had worn in the past. It seemed like she knew how to weave since she was born. The king checked the belt as he had done before, and the girl spoke exactly as she had in the past. Then the king said, "It is you." After that, the girl lived in the palace once again. She finished all the weaving she had left unfinished before she died. And she explained what had happened to her to the king. She said to the king, "That girl is the daughter of the witch." The witch's daughter wore a ring that her mother had given her. The king was furious after learning what had happened to the innocent girl. He said, "They have gone too far! How dare they deceive me!" Then he killed the witch's daughter and ground her flesh into paste. It was sent to the witch. The witch knew nothing about what had happened. Delighted, she thought, "Even when my stepdaughter was in the palace, I never received gifts like this. Now that my own daughter is there, I can finally enjoy such delicious food." As she was about to finish eating the paste, she found the ring inside. Only then did she realize that it was her daughter's flesh, ground into paste. She died of a broken heart. It is not good to do bad things. If you do something bad, it will eventually be revealed one day. This story is about how wrongdoing will eventually be revealed.
