Description:		Translation (Rita Seng Mai) A long time ago, a man left home to start a business. At that moment, his wife was already pregnant. When his wife was about five or six months pregnant, he returned home. On his way back home, he had to sleep under a big tree. He said, "Tree, guard me, please. I will sleep here tonight." While he was sleeping at night, he heard many voices near the tree he was sleeping under. They said to the tree, "Hey! There is a newborn baby in the village. Let's go eavesdrop on what the baby will be named." Creatures such as ghouls, ghosts, different kinds of trees, stones, and tigers asked the tree to go to the village. The tree replied, "I am busy at the moment. I have a guest tonight. I need to guard him, so I think I can't go there with you." They said, "Then it can't be helped." It said to them, "Tell me what they name the baby when you guys are back." At dawn, they returned. They were talking noisily. Then the tree asked them, "Are you guys back?" They answered, "Yes, we are. The baby was born." It asked them, "What's the baby's gender?" They answered, "It's a boy." It asked, "What's the name?" They replied, "We don't know. The family was discussing what to name the baby when the baby's father came back. But we already gave him a name. We called him 'The Tiger Takes His Life' because the family still hasn't named him yet." It asked, "What?" They replied, "Yes, we named him 'The One Who Will Be Killed by a Tiger.'" It just said, "Umm. I see." The man heard everything they said and felt upset for the baby. The next morning, he said goodbye to the tree, "I am going back home now." When he arrived home, his baby was already born. Then he realized that the baby those creatures were talking about was his own. He said, "Let's name him "The One Who Can Beat the Tiger." I heard the creatures talking about the baby, so let's name him that." They held a naming ceremony. The father was upset about his son's future, although the son was growing without any harm. The son grew up and became a young adult. When he was about fifteen or sixteen years old, he went logging with his father. The father said to his son, "I have heard that the creatures named you ''The One Who Will Be Killed by a Tiger," but I named you "The One Who Can Beat the Tiger." Let's go cut the trees." (Kahtum is a tool used for pounding rice.) When they finished cutting down a log, a tiger suddenly attacked them. The father had already predicted that this would happen one day. They had their knives and spears ready when the tiger attacked. Then they successfully killed the tiger. The father happily said, "That's great! I gave you the right name! We killed the tiger. Let's celebrate!" They invited the other villagers and celebrated their successful killing of the tiger. The father said, "My son, jump over the tiger seven times." The son followed his father's instruction and jumped over the tiger. After six jumps, he was a little tired, and on the seventh jump, he was scratched by the tiger's fangs. He died from the scratch wound caused by the tiger's fangs. That's why, in the past during animism, people had to name a baby as soon as he or she was born. Nowadays, we give names to babies only during naming ceremonies. Before the naming ceremony, we usually don't tell people about the newborn baby or what name it will be given. According to Jinghpaw stories, we should give names to newborns as soon as they are born. This story teaches us that babies can be given any name, such as Ma Gam, Ma Naw, or Ma Kaw, during naming ceremonies (if a proper name hasn't been decided yet).
