| Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) These are about riddles. When someone asks, "What is the one that uses its intestines to build a house?" people think for a moment and answer, "Is it a cricket?" He replied, "No, it's Jang Pa." (Jang Pa is a kind of spider. It uses silk, which people describe as its intestines, to spin its web.) Another riddle is, "What is it that spreads a net in the forest?" Then people give several different answers, but none of them are correct. They ask, "Is it a root?" The person who asked the riddle replies, "You are close. What kind of root?" In the end, they give up and say, "We don't know." He says, "No, it's the root of the Lamai tree." It is a kind of tree that grows very large, produces many fruits, and forms a round shade. Then that person asks another riddle: "What is it that has two knives in a single hilt?" People think about answers, but they can't get the correct answer. They say, "Is it a leaf?" He says, "No, it's not." In the end, it turns out to be Shalung, a kind of tree. We used to throw its seeds into the sky when we were young. When it sprouts, it has two leaves like knives pointing upward. Then he asks another riddle: "What is the Shingwai Wut bird sitting on a branch?" People answer, "It's a Shingwai Wut bird." (The male Shingwai Wut bird is red, and the female is green.) He asks them, "What is it?" They say, "We don't know." However, some people know the answer and say, "It's chilli!" He says, "That's right!" Chilies are green when unripe and turn red when ripe. That's why he compares it to the Shingwai Wut bird. Then he asks another riddle: "What is it that prepares split bamboo, flattened bamboo, and rafters for a house and to live there?" They are thinking about the answer. In the end, they say, "We don't know." But some people say, "It's a cattle pen." The cattle pen has a poorly thatched roof and gaps in the fence, with cattle kept inside. The riddle is based on the similarity between the description and a house under construction. Some people give the correct answer. Then he asks another riddle: "What is it that an eagle circles around a heap of gold?" People try to figure it out, but in the end, they say, "We don't know anymore." In the past, when the grain was piled up, we fanned it to dry it. In the riddle, the fan is compared to an eagle circling a heap of gold. The heap of gold is a metaphor for the pile of grain. Another riddle is: "What is it that can even reach the sky?" He asks, "What is it? It can reach up to the sky." The answer is a sago palm. Then he asks another riddle: "What are they that are large and have two lakes around them?" He says, "They are eyes." Then he asks another riddle: "What is it that has an oil bag hanging from it?" People think of possible answers and say, "Is it a nose?" The riddle uses an oil bag as a metaphor for a runny nose. He asks, "Tree logs are left under the sun. What is it?" They say, "Is it teeth?" We use the word "Keung" for leaving tree logs under the sun. Another riddle is: "Its leaves are stiff and circular, and its fruits are small. What is it?" The answer is the fan palm.
