| Description: | Translation (Rita Seng Mai) I remember this story very well because my mother told it to me before bed when I was young. Once upon a time, there was a group of brothers in the village. There were five of them. Also, there was a grandmother and her grandson. They lived on the outskirts of the village and were poor. One day, the brothers said to the orphan boy, "Hey, let's go catch birds." However, the orphan boy had to fetch water and do work for his grandmother, so he was always late in hunting birds. The group of brothers didn't have to work, so they always went bird hunting early. But the orphan boy could only go bird hunting after he had finished all his work, so he was always late to go hunting. He didn't have any places left to set his snare. In the end, he decided to set it under a big tree, thinking, "Whatever, take it or leave it. I will just set my snare here." Later, the boys said to the orphan boy, "Hey, let's go see what we got in our snares." But the orphan boy could not go with them early because he had to help his grandmother. A deer was caught in the orphan boy's trap, and a hornbill was caught in the group of brothers' trap. When the brothers arrived first, they saw the animals and swapped them. They took the deer from the orphan boy's snare and put it in their own, and they took the hornbill from their snare and placed it in the orphan boy's snare. When the orphan boy arrived later and saw what was in their snares, he realized he had been tricked by the boys. He said, "There is no way that a deer could be caught in the snare set in the tree, or that a hornbill, which usually stays above the ground, could get caught in a snare set on the ground!" Then the boys got angry and shouted at the orphan boy, "You are trying to take what we caught!" The orphan boy went back home and said to his grandmother, "Grandma, just a hornbill was caught in my snare. But a deer got caught in the boys' snare." The group of boys said to them, "If you think it is unfair, let's call other elders and solve this matter." The boys had wealthy elders who would take their side. But the orphan boy and his grandmother had only an old, dirty, blind man who lived on the outskirts to side with them. When they discussed the matter, it seemed that the brothers and their elders were oppressing the orphan boy and had almost won the case. The old man whom the orphan boy had called looked sleepy. Then the brothers and other elders laughed at him, saying, "Look at that man on the orphan boy's side! He is sleepy!" At that moment, the old man said, "Fish are flying to the sky." Then they laughed out loud and said, "Ha ha! How is that possible? How can fish fly?" The old man replied, "Exactly. You laugh at the idea of fish flying in the sky. In the same way, a deer cannot climb a tree. It's impossible. Deer can only walk on the ground. That is the deer that got caught in the orphan boy's snare. The hornbill flies in the sky. The group of boys set their snares in the tree, so the hornbill belongs to them!" The orphan boy and his grandmother won the case in the end.
