Description:In this recording, Ibiro recounts parts of the origin and migration history of the Kibiri people: beginning at Buo, then moving to Koiara, Doibo, Karatiwo, Deimare and Babeio. They also describe daily life and habits from their childhood: helping their fathers build canoes and plant crops, learning these skills through hands-on teaching; while the mothers collected shellfish. Ibiro further explains that fishing was usually done either in groups of men or in pairs, with the men taking turns shooting fish with a bow and arrow. He notes that fish were much more abundant back then. He also mentions a traditional fishing method involving the use of a poisonous root (tumi in Kibiri, Imora in Hiri Motu) that disoriented the fish, causing them to swim into the nets. The fishing method described by the speaker — involving the use of a “poisonous root” to disorient fish so they can be collected — corresponds to well-documented traditional fishing practices in Papua New Guinea and across the Pacific region. In many areas, crushed roots of certain plants (for example, species of Derris, which release the toxin rotenone) have historically been used to stupefy fish in shallow rivers or creeks. At this stage, the exact plant species and the specific local tradition mentioned here have not yet been identified or confirmed for the Kibiri region. This note is added to situate the described practice within a broader, known cultural context while acknowledging that further ethnobotanical verification is needed.
