Description: | Apato continues to make a thumb piano, surrounded by other villagers in the center of Ngolo who are talking, joking, and singing. He pokes more holes into the wooden board in order to attach the piano keys with a flexible fiber. Mangome is still singing next to him. Apato asks Ntemba, who is sitting behind him, to cut more flexible vines for him. Ntemba leaves to get more materials. After all keys are attached to the wooden board, tightly fastened on the back side, and after cutting the ends of the straps that hold the keys, Apato puts the board on a hollow piece of carved-out tree trunk. The board gets attached to the body with wooden nails that he hammers in with the flat side of a knife blade. Tsimbo sits down next to him, figuring out what's going on and starting to sing and joking with Mangome. Once the board with the keys is attached to the body, Apato takes a thin stick, measures how long it has to be to fit the width of the piano and hands it to Ntemba who cuts it to the right length. The two call for a machete and Apato strips the stick off its bark and smoothens out the stick. He then lifts one side of the keys with a machete and slides the stick under. | |
