Once upon a time there was a family who had two sisters. They had a male buffalo (li³pung¹). The elder sister fell in love with the buffalo, so when she went to collect firewood, she would always go with the buffalo. The lipung would break the firewood for her. One day her younger sister also went with her and saw what was happening and reported that the work was being done by the lipung – her brother. So she reported to her parents that they were in love. Because of that reason the parents decided not to keep the lipung, so they had a big festival and they asked the elder sister to go and collect water in a bamboo tube. It is called kha³ming¹ thu¹. However they made holes in both ends so she could not collect water. When she went for collecting water, they slaughtered the lipung and send pieces to all the villagers and finished up the lipung meat. One portion was left up on the khae¹dung¹ (head shelf). When she tried to collect the water, the tube would not fill, but it took so long. One bird made a sound to her, saying ‘thu su thoe pa ro ro’ ‘the water pipe has a hole’. Then she looked at it and she saw the holes, and she threw it away and came back angry. And then she was speechless at home and then the blood fell on her head from the khaedung where the last piece of the meat of the lipung was sitting, and then she was trying to discover what blood it was, and at last she came to know that it was her lover, the lipung. So she cried and cried, where the sacrifice occurred, behind the house, and died there. So the parents decided, because she died on the place of the buffalo sacrifice, so they made one garden, and cleaned up that place. They said that whatever things came out from that place would be significant. Three plants came out from that place (where both had died). First tweq²khi¹ - a red flower. It blooms only in the celebration time, The second one is nyap²ru² - a large leaf for wrapping rice for a meal &c and vaq¹choq¹ a piece of bamboo which is used for tying. So when they sacrifice the lipung in a usual festival, the sister (a²jung¹ ti¹ nyu³) will bind the legs of the buffalo, others cannot bind. Daughter-in-law cannot do the binding. These three things came out from the place of sacrifice and because of that now buffaloes are only killed at that time of year. (7’’11”) end
