Description: | The Tucumã palm (Astrocaryum aculeatum) is used in a variety of ways by the Aikanã and other indigenous people of the area. In Aikanã it is called dikare. The oily orange flesh of the fruits are eaten and the shell of the large, round nut inside is used to fashion craft, such as necklaces and rings. The coconut-like white flesh inside the nut is also eaten and its watery juice drunk. The young leaf shoots are used to strip off the fibre, dry it and twist it into strings and then into larger lines, by rolling them together on the leg (nɨi yãu’ã’i). In this video Maria Tadeu is working on smoothing the already twisted line so it can be used for platting. The smoothing is done by holding the line with both hands, moving up and down, scraping it against the edge of a piece of wood. They are then used for many purposes, such as the manufacturing of Marico bags or baskets, woven or rather platted or knotted, into various sizes. These Marico bags, presented in the video, are are characteristic of and unique to the indigenous people that today inhabit the Guaporé and Rio Branco region. The thickness of the line suggests that Maria Tadeu will make a hammock with the line she is smoothing. Next to hammocks and bags, tucumã fibre lines are further used for bow strings, crafts and so forth | |
