Description:		Luiza tells her story about when she was given away as a young orphan to a Brazilian landowner, for whom she worked like a slave for many years and where she was mistreated. Later, the Aikanã elder Pe’i, rescued her and brought her back to the community (because of this, Luisa named one of her children after Pe’i). Maria Tadeu also talks about experiences of forced labour and exploitation, during the time when the major road constructions (BR-364) between Vilhena/Mato Grosse and the capital of Rondonia, Porto Velho, took place. Many indigenous people, men and women, worked under extreme physical conditions for months without pay, living in encampments and merely getting food, clothes or glass beads in return. The labour exploitation and involvement in the road construction has been little documented. The tragic consequences of this road link for the indigenous population, whose territories were divided by it, are highlighted, for instance, in Price (1990) “"Before the Bulldozer": The Nambiquara Indians and the World Bank” and reports handed to the Comissão da Verdade.
