Description: BP01 & JM03 talk about: their backgrounds, ages, birthdays, where they have lived, their siblings; when they speak Guernesiais (G) nowadays; their parents playing card games during the Occupation (O), TODT workers; description of where JM03 used to lived when she was a child, near Perelle Bake house, a neighbour (Mr. Girard) bringing crustacea, and her father having a boat; food during the O; JM03’s sister had a milk round during the O, buying sacks of peas to shell, three weeks without bread during the O, being thrifty, reusing things, now people throw more away, potato peel cake, rations, growing food, feeding the children first during the O, BP01 fell through greenhouse, Red Cross parcels, Germans being hungry at the end of the O, a German soldier stealing potatoes from JM03’s father’s greenhouse, words for ‘greenhouse’; JM03 keeping tortoises, rearing them, one with only one eye, liking animals, but not cats; living close to her daughter (JM03); JM03 working BP01’s father, potatoes; packing flowers for sending to England, picking primroses where the St. Saviour’s reservoir is now, primrose day 19th April and Easter, picking them after school and packing them in the evening; where BP01 lives now at Albecq; more houses nowadays; JM03 going to chapel and singing in a choir; where her children live, New Zealand (JM03), long journey to get there, son-in-law (carpenter) and daughter move house a lot, came back to visit Guernsey as son-in-law’s mother had been unwell/died, south island being very beautiful, seasons changing; school in St. Saviour’s, where Douzaine is now, the classroom being separated with a screen; German during the O) took over the school buildings; reservoir being built and having no health and safety, walking to school, then having a bus, leaving school at age 14/15 and going straight to work, having a small garden, growing tomatoes; learning German, saying ‘It’s warm’ (I fait caod), being punished as German teacher hand understood ‘Fat Cow’; bike tyres during the O, hose; BP01’s father delivering coal during the O, making cakes as children, not at school as it was too hot, wooden shoes at the end of the O; JM03 had a boat, fishing, mackerel, crab pots; going ormering with husband, going fishing for limpets and winkles; not speaking G with children, JM03’s late husband didn’t speak it, JM03 speaks with her sister in G, but not frequently, other speakers of G, speaking more in English; old fashioned farming tools, LR01 came to collect them and JM03 speaks with him, other speakers, some go to Les Adams chapel; JM03’s grandson likes hearing her speak G, and the Guernsey accent; sad that G is dying, perhaps it can be saved, Eisteddfod, some competitors pronouncing G like French; Don Girard being good on the radio when he used to read the news in G, Cynthia Lenormand having a different language, more reliant on Marie De Garis’ Dictiounnaire nowadays, speaking G, but forgetting words; having a haircut/appointment; the late Don Girard read the news well, his daughter sometimes reads it, people promoting G are doing a good job, names of various people; week’s activities, going swimming at Rousse, Cobo and Beausejour, BP01 having severe cramp, not going swimming again, swimming being a good exercise, not being able to go to the beach during the O, being taught to swim (JM03), the sea being different from a swimming pool, knitting covers for ‘Easter chicks’ for (chocolate egg) charity that works in Africa (house building), knitting other things for charity; going grocery shopping, going to different shops, comparing prices; English newspapers being full of ‘rubbish’ and bad news; going for a cup of tea and meeting up with friends; JM03 liking cooking, BP01 not being so keen on cooking; JM03 going to chapel, and choir practice, quite social, JM03 liking concerts and musicals; BP01’s granddaughter like concerts too; JM03 liking Guernsey Brass Band; BP01 liking it too: plenty of places to go and things to do, one must make an effort; changing name of Aurigny airlines, for and against, preferring flying with Aurigny, visitors being concerned about flying in small plane; hiring a plane for medical reasons, to Bristol, fog disrupting flights, JM03 not liking travelling by boat; changes to buses, company not knowing Guernsey, people missing buses, unfair pricing structure regarding visitors and local, cars are much more convenient than buses, several changes, buses being too big, harming the image of Guernsey, why the changes?, people won’t leave their cars behind, drivers not being from Guernsey, locals working in offices, there being a shortage of local drivers.
