Title:The story of the Río Chapulín
0185-The story of the Río Chapulín
Documentation of Zenzontepec Chatino language and culture
Contributor:TCR
Coverage:Mexico
Date:2008-07-30
Description:The story is of a place along the Río Chapulín (Río Atoyac) on route to Santa María Tlapanaquiahuitl where there was a tunnel that people and animals used to get sucked into by a vicious snake that dwelled in the depths of the river. The people searched for Mixtecs to kill the snake. A Mixtec agreed to do it, so he swallowed many coals of burning oak and entered the tunnel. He went in to burn out the snake. The river turned red and the Mixtec exited, exhausted. He had killed the snake. Today there is a pile of rocks covering the entrance to the tunnel. The story has many things in common with the story called "El brujo nagual tigre". The tale ends around 4:55, where a Spanish retelling begins.Audio duration [00:08:37]
