Title:The cracked rock
0185-The cracked rock
Documentation of Zenzontepec Chatino language and culture
Contributor:TCR
Coverage:Mexico
Date:2007-07-11
Description:Long ago near a bog in San José, Zenzontepec, there was a big rock where a dangerous snake lived. Animals that would go there to drink would sink in the mud and get eaten by the snake. People that passed by would be sucked in and devoured. The people began avoiding the area but that meant they had to pass by a higher road. They sought help from one of the Mixtec traveling merchants that frequented the area. The Mixtec said he had a friend who could kill the snake if they got paid. Later, the Mixtecs showed up and the sky got very cloudy and they made lightning come down to crack the rock. The broke the rock, and then the snake came out and died. The broken rock is still there today. Audio duration [00:05:28]
