Title:The bone-tailed snake
0185-The bone-tailed snake
Documentation of Zenzontepec Chatino language and culture
Contributor:TCR
Coverage:Mexico
Date:2007-07-10
Description:TCR tells of a now legendary snake that existed in the Zenzontepec region in the past. It used to fly and was very dangerous. The Spanish name "rabo de hueso" is a near translation equivalent of the Chatino name kwénà tíjyàn (literaly 'snake of forearm's length', where the measure word is a tonal variant of the word tijyan 'bone'). The name "rabo de hueso" (lit. 'tail of bone) is used in parts of Mexico and Guatemala to refer to the fer-de-lance or other similar highly venomous pit-vipers. Therefore, the term likely refers to a real snake that used to occur in the region but no longer does. The Chatino description ends at 2:10 an it is followed by a Spanish description.
