| Description: | TCR tells of the traditional Mesoamerican practice of people having a tono, an animal spirit companion. When a child was born, ash would be spread on the ground and one could discern what animal the child's tono was by the tracks in the ash. Many illnesses or problems were viewed as problems with one's tono. An evangelist came to Zenzontepec and purified the area. There had been deep dark pools in the rivers where tonos and spirit creatures would dwell. He blessed these places and closed the eyes of the god of nature. He put an end to tonos and nagualism, the practice of brujos converting themselves into their tono. Since then people no longer have tonos of jaguars, snakes, or lightning. The Chatino relation ends at 3:58, at which point a Spanish retelling begins. There are some details in the Spanish version not in the Chatino one. At 9:27 begins an intro to the discussion of species that have disappeared from the region. The discussion of disappeared birds continues in the text entitled "Pájaros desaparecidos".
