Description:		These two files contain scans of photographs of a manuscript currently located in the British Library among the collection of Hugh Nevill, a British civil servant who resided in Ceylon in the second half of the 19th century, and is therefore commonly known as the "Nevill manuscript". This copy of the manuscript was kindly donated by Prof. Kenneth David Jackson (who obtained it from the British Library and went on to publish a complete study of its contents (Jackson, 1990)) to be made available in the archive. The Nevill manuscript consists of a substantial collection of song lyrics and other oral traditions in "Ceylon Portuguese", of the greatest historical, linguistic, and ethnographic interest. According to Prof. Jackson, the compilation must have been produced around the 1870s or 1880s. The copy made available here has been divided into 2 parts: file slp01_1 corresponds to the section of the manuscript identified as "Portuguese Song Batticaloa", and slp01_2 contains "Cantiga de Purtiegese" [Songs of the Portuguese] "Susasoe de Oersaan maas Falentine" [Deeds of Oersaan and Falentine]. NOTE: Professor KD Jackson learned of the Nevill Manuscript from Sri Lankan historian Tikiri Abeyasinghe in Colombo in 1975 and secured a photograph copy from the British Library, which was the basis for the transcription by Dr. Elizabeth Jackson and the translation and study published in K.
