| Description: | Metadata to go with all 'Haduke' files. These make up a complete recording of a ha:Duke, a song cycle sung at festival times over the course of an entire night. The cycle is divided into various sa:lu 'episodes'. The first half of the sa:lu are invocations to various gods and dieties, whereas the second half focuses more on natural themes, such as rains, trees, flowers, bees, wild animals (such as the elephant and the gaur) and finally birds. The end of the song cycle is timed to coincide with the dawn, when the birds that are being sung about also start to vocalise in the forest. Typially, a head priest (tammaDi) would lead each line as a brief solo, and be accompanied by a chorus of women (he:La:lu), who would complete the line, and also sing the refrains. In order to preserve the clarity of the words, Dasegowda agreed to sing the entire cycle unaccompanied. This is naturally far more tiring than singing with a group, and he decided to sing only the variant parts of each song, and omit the refrains, which can easily be worked out from other verses. | |
