Description: | This is a recording of a court case in Irukupi village. The two parties are Saba Diebu and Mame ŋode. Saba had been in Daru for the previous weeks. He took his son Lendi to Daru hospital because he was suffering from chest pain and problems breathings. Saba had slept in his son's clothes the previous night. His spirit came to Saba and told him that someone had put a spell on him and his death was near. Saba got on the boat the next day and came to settle the matter in a public mediation. Saba knew from his dream that Mame was behind this. The recording starts about 20minutes into the mediation. Saba sits on the right. Mame sits on the left. Several men sits close to the debate as witnesses. Many people sits around and listen. Towards the end, one of Saba's sisters gets up and accuses Mame of putting sickness on other people too. The debate is mediated by Lendi Jami, the village magistrate. Mame explains that he is innocent, but he saw that another sorcerer had come to put a spell on Saba's son. Aparently, the sorcerer was sent from Dimiri village, because there is another man in Dimiri who is angry about Saba's son. Saba's son has a young wife, who had an affair with that man from Dimiri in the previous year. The case is settled by Mame. He spills some water and calls them names of everyone involved. Then, he says "karia", which is a spell that sets people free or releases spirits and sickness. Saba and Mame shake hands. At the end, Lendi and Saba give me a short English interview about what had just happened. recording equipment: CANON XA30 + Rode Videomic (.mp4), ZOOM H5 internal mic (_TrLR.wav), AKG headmounted mic (_TrH.wav), Sennheiser lapel mic (_TrS.wav), CANON Powershot G12 (.jpg) I have changed the setting of the Rode Videomic about halfway through the video: First I deactivated the "-10DB filter" to get a louder recording. Then I activated the "high-cut filter" to suppress wind noises. | |
