| Description: | Herman tells the story of a tribal war in the early 20th century, prior to the introduction of Christianity. The Yerisiam and Miere were on one side, and the Ekagi (Mee) and Wate (Tarunggare) on the other. The conch shells used during this war are still kept by some descendants of those involved. Herman says that the conflict ended around 1923. He learned about it from his grandfather Nananeri, who helped broker the peace with the Ekagi leader Waukapea. After telling the story in Yerisiam, he translates and explains in Malay. He also speaks a few sentences of Ekagi, which his grandfather learned to speak and learned from his grandfather. | |
| Herman is from the village of Erega in the Yamor Lakes. He has great knowledge of custom and tradition and has traveled widely. He natively speaks Yerisiam, Yamor Lakes Kamoro, and Papuan Malay. He also speaks some Ekagi is familiar with the vocabulary and basic grammar of Mairasi, Miere, various other languages. | ||
