Description:This is an old tape recording made in the 1990s which was digitized in 2017 at the MPI for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig. Tamara Ivanovna Nadeina had a 2-minute slot on the local radio in which she would read little tales in Negidal and provide a brief list of the main words at the end. This unfinished tale, which consists of five little "lessons", tells how an old woman is tricked by a passing soldier into believing that he is a friend of her deceased son, with whom he is lying in one and the same grave. The old woman gives the soldier some fabric and money to carry back to her son. Her second, still living son is disgusted at her gullibility and sets off to find less stupid people among whom he can settle (reminiscent of the theme of the session entitled “How stupid people are!”). The continuation is somewhat unclear, especially since the recording ends before the tale is finished; however, it would appear that this son himself tricks a gullible rich woman into giving him her sow with piglets dressed up in her coat and with a sled and three horses to transport them. For the ELAN alignment, this little story was cut out of the overall sound file and noise reduction was performed in Audacity. Transcribed by Brigitte Pakendorf, transcription checked with Antonina Kazarova, who also provided the Russian translation. Glossed by Brigitte Pakendorf and questions checked with Antonina Kazarova and Galina Kandakova.
This project focuses on the documentation of Negidal, a highly moribund Northern Tungusic language spoken by at most a handful of individuals on the Amgun’ and Lower Amur rivers in the Russian Federation. The language comprises two dialects, Upper and Lower Negidal, of which the latter might already be extinct. The project will result primarily in an extensive corpus of interlinearized texts from the Upper dialect together with accompanying audio recordings.
