Description: | This is a very long fairy tale told by Daria Nadeina. The recording was undertaken in little installments (with DIN probably reading the tale); the repeated statements in Russian "I'm switching off the recorder/I've switched it back on" were cut out of the original sound file in Audacity in 2017 (sound file called "DI_skazka_170710_clean.wav"), and the alignment in ELAN was done with this file. However, some asides in Negidal (such as "well, I'll go on") escaped notice. The recording was done by Elena Kalinina and Nina Sumbatova in 2010, the transcription was done by Brigitte Pakendorf in 2017 and checked with Daria Nadeina, who also provided the Russian translation. Glossed by Brigitte Pakendorf, questions checked in February 2018 with Antonina Kazarova and Galina Kandakova. The tale tells about an orphan who goes to fight a terrible devil, in which endeavour he is helped by his future brother-in-law and a little bird - which turns out to be his younger brother. With magic help the three heroes are finally able to defeat the devil, after which they go to free the hero's mother from the house where she has been kept by the devil. The names of the heroes vary throughout the tale: the supposed orphan is called Emeksikan in the beginning (hence the title given to the session), but is also referred to as Emensikan, Emesikan, Emejsikan, Mesnejkan, and Mejsikan. His (future) brother-in-law is variously called Miktekan, Miktejkan, Mintejkan, Mintenkan, and Mitejkan.
This project focuses on the documentation of Negidal, a highly moribund Northern Tungusic language spoken by at most a handful of individuals on the Amgun’ and Lower Amur rivers in the Russian Federation. The language comprises two dialects, Upper and Lower Negidal, of which the latter might already be extinct. The project will result primarily in an extensive corpus of interlinearized texts from the Upper dialect together with accompanying audio recordings.
