Description:		This file is a copy of the publication of Fr. August Becker, 1971, 'Erzählungen der Valmana von der Nordküste Neuguineas' ('Stories of the Walman from the North coast of New Guinea'), in Anthropos No. 66, pp. 1-51; 397-443; 779-816. It is included here for those who read German and want to check the original texts that were used in the English translations of these stories given in walman 098 and 099. The Walman (Valman) texts in this document are written in the orthography devised by Fr. August Becker. The German translations are also his own. The conversion of these texts into the orthography that we (Matthew Dryer, Lea Brown and elder Walman speakers of Lemieng) have now decided on, and their translations into English can be found in walman098 (except for Text 7, which can be found in walman099). These texts were used by us, Matthew Dryer and Lea Brown, in the following way: with our main consultant, Dismas Potul, we would all look at a text sentence by sentence, and try to understand how to pronounce the words in a sentence based on our knowledge of linguistics and German phonetics and Dismas' knowledge of potential lexical items that were appropriate to the context. We would concomitantly check the German translation in case it helped Dismas to understand the written Walman words. After just a few texts, it was easy to transcribe Fr Becker's Walman into our modern orthography, and it became easy for Dismas to identify the lexical items that were written in the texts. As this is a copy of the original publication, it contains both the Walman and a German translation of Text 7, which elders requested we withhold from public view while there is an unresolved land dispute. Since this document is publically available in a library we felt that the entire original copy should be included in this documentation, but it is still restricted to only those who request permission to see it.
		Dismas was born just after WWII. He was educated to high school level and became a teacher, and eventually a school principal.
