This project consists in the documentation of Eibela, also called Aimele (ISO-639 AIL), as part of a PhD project at James Cook University which will ultimately result in a grammar of the language along with a dictionary and a corpus of texts. Eibela is a severely endangered language with 300 speakers in Lake Campbell, Western Province in Papua New Guinea.
This is a recording of Wese telling a story about his father and uncles holding a funeral feast for a hunting dog. The hand-written transcription and translation of this recording are available in session ailoa0296. The file ailot0295-2.wav is the extracted left channel of the original audio recording in ailot0295-1.wav for use with the elan files ailot0295-1.eaf and ailot0295-2.eaf. Elan file ailot0295-1.eaf includes free translations of the recording while ailot0295-2.eaf also includes interlinear glosses imported from Fieldworks Language Explorer.
Wese is an Eibela man living in Lake Campbell and is the speaker of the story. Grant Aiton is a PhD researcher translating the story in order to research the Eibela language.
