| Description: | During this session the p047 came to tell a story with her support group. We had set everything up for in front of p038's house under the tree (that is, the house I was living it during my stay in Katoufoura). Another group of older ladies had come as well, who wanted to sing songs. For some reason they thought I was doing a session on songs that night. Since I wanted to record stories I explained to them that I already had a lot of songs, but if they were willing I could record the songs some other day. It seems always difficult to get 'manyingen'. Nevertheless, the presence of the other ladies intimidated p047 and she refused to start out. None other were ready to step in. A long discussion ensued between p002 and p038, with the ladies, which I did not understand very well. It, however, turned out that the old lady did not want to tell the story in front of the other ladies, because she was afraid of being ridiculed therafter by them. She had no problem with the family of p038 and some other friends and curious onlookers, but the presence of the other ladies seemed to not please her. I am not sure why. p002 and the owner told me that she told the 'manyingen' well and it was how they remember them from their childhood. She is also the first person who tells stories in a way that I know from other storytelling cultures, imitating voices, including direct speech, modulating her voice etc. This is why I believe there to be an animosity between her and the other ladies, and it is not the fact that she does not know how to tell stories well. After the other ladies left, she told a very long 'manyingen'. Another lady who had joined the storytelling session as a curious onlooker wanted to tell a story as well. p002 informed me that she jumped the singign of the song. She is from Guinea Bissau and she had just joined the story telling as a curious onlooker. Unfortunately, I could never track her down again to get her personal information, although I tried twice. Again the ladies sat on a bench facing me, and the other audience who was sitting a little all over the place. | |
