Title:SD1-264
Bibliographic Citation:Tia Cawane, Danerek, H. Stefan, Danerek, H. Stefan, Danerek, H. Stefan; 2015-06-25; Genre: Medicine/huru: Tia Cawane tells about her huru, mainly 'rera', 'dhombe' and 'kaju ka'. Recorded on my second stay in Ko'a in June '15, 25 June, in the late afternoon at Tia's house in the front guest room, spontaneously. 'Huru rera' (name of plant, but it is not used in the cure!), 'huru dhombe' (or 'hala', name of tree), 'huru kaju ka' (pepaya), 'huru hala' and 'huru wia' (five). The first uses soil only and is applied to sore throat, ill throat, cold/flu. I tried it because I suffered from cold then. She blows three or five times on the throat. The second, 'dhombe' (see also Maria Methi Du'ane), uses fresh, young leaves ('lobo' sprouts) from the 'hala' tree, soil, and is chewed with betel. Symptom: swollen feet/legs. 'Huru kaju ka' uses root of papaya and is chewed with betel. Symptoms are itching around and in the eyes. 'Huru hala' is 'huru dhombe', repeated. 'Huru wia' uses the 'wia' bean plant. Symptoms: Severe headache, feel like want to vomit, but does not. All cures use use saliva, four chewed areca nut and piper betel, and all are applied to symptoms only (Tia does not do prohibitions-curses to hang in the trees). Tia 'bhulu ba'o' (ask for divine/ancestor support, order the disease to leave the body) after applying the mixtures. This recording was done without preparation, as I was about to leave Ko'a, and the recording situation was not good. The materials are not complete and the recording was done with the H4N directly. Present were Tia's two kids, who are also heard. Tia asked them to go and fetch 'hala' leaves, which they did finally. It was a bit far. My (SD) voice is heard all through the recording, asking questions. Like an interview. Tia also tells of people she has cured and who taught her.; digital wav file recorded at 48 khz/24 bit, eaf file, photo jpeg file; Kaipuleohone University of Hawai'i Digital Language Archive;http://hdl.handle.net/10125/47838.
