Title:SD1-078
Bibliographic Citation:Paji, Paula, Danerek, H. Stefan, Danerek, H. Stefan, Danerek, H. Stefan, Ratu, Hilarius; 2014-02-10; Genre: Folk tale/myth. Title: Diji (alt. Debha Lélu Léna). Palu'e folk tale narrated by Paula Paji (b. 1930s) in a room in her home, the most prominent in kampong Ndeo (village heads etc.), morning 14 Feb 2014, one of my first "real" recordings on Palu'e, three tales in one session. Diji is both a personal name and a name of an edible plant, a kind of wild yams. This tale exists in many versions, i.e. told by several narrators (search Roja, Lengu, Baga) from different villages, and several are uploaded to the collection, several with the title Debha (or Depa, Deba) Lelu Lena (Debha Lélu Léna). Synopsis: In this tale, and in the other versions, the Eagle saves, or returns to life, the dead Diji, killed by the angry mother because she cooked her younger sibling Diji to feed the other siblings (she was instructed by the mother to cook them ‘diji)’. Later the people from the village brings back Diji to her family when looking for fire (to cook) up in the eagle’s nest. The eagle searches for Diji, and destroys the roofs of people's houses in anger over the loss. In the end the eagle is satisfied with a rooster in exchange for Diji, after having been offered several valuable items.; digital wav file recorded at 48 khz/24 bit; Kaipuleohone University of Hawai'i Digital Language Archive;http://hdl.handle.net/10125/38981.
